When Australia Became a Republic

Description

In When Australia Became a Republic, cultural leader and civic thinker Esther Anatolitis traces the key moments in our quiet shift away from the monarchy, from abandoning “God Save the Queen” to shrugging off royal visits. She argues that while culturally independent, Australia remains constitutionally bound to the British Crown—our governments existing only at the monarch’s pleasure.

This sharp and provocative essay maps new paths towards a fully realised republic, from revitalising civics education to fostering a healthier national conversation and, ultimately, confronting the incompatibility of monarchy and democracy.

Essential reading for anyone invested in Australia’s future, When Australia Became a Republic is both a reflection on our national identity and a call to action for genuine independence.
