About the author: 

Wolf Mayer taught geology at the University of Canberra and at the Australian National University (ANU) for 25 years. Following his retirement he was appointed a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Earth and Marine Sciences in the Research School of Earth Sciences at the ANU. His main research interests are in the history of the earth sciences and in the early geological exploration of Australia,
