Woven basket - Rene Nelson
Description
This small coiled basket was handmade by fibre artist Rene Nelson, using Tjanpi (desert grass) and raffia. Compact and full of character, it reflects the creative strength and cultural knowledge of women living on Country.
About the artist:
Rene was born in the 1950s at Warlu, a rock hole in the Western Desert. A founding member of Irrunytju Arts, she has exhibited internationally and continues to weave alongside her daughter Maureen and sister Stacia. Rene draws on her deep knowledge of Country and traditional craft to create vibrant, contemporary artworks — from camels and baskets to tin sculptures and beads.
She is one of over 400 artists supported by Tjanpi Desert Weavers, a social enterprise enabling women in remote communities to earn income on Country through fibre art.
About the supplier:
Tjanpi Desert Weavers are a social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council working with women in the remote Central and Western deserts (WA, SA, NT) who earn an income from contemporary fibre art. Read more
