About the artwork:

In this whimsical work, Rosie Tarku King evokes a shower of wildflowers tossed through the arid desert air. Acid green, hot pink and magenta swirl together in a colour-haze reminiscent of willy-willies and dust storms — a cacophony of colour capturing the energy of windblown Country.

Underlying the playfulness is a deep ecological knowledge. Tarku King’s nuanced depiction of wind and movement reveals her intimate connection to the desert landscape.

Of the artwork, Tarku King says:
‘You can see salt lakes dry without water, some jilas and little billabongs with water, sand hills, red sands, dry grass and trees.’

About the artist:

Rosie Tarku King was born c.1934 at Payinjarra, a jumu (soakage) in the Great Sandy Desert. A Walmajarri woman, she spent her early life walking across Country with her family, hunting wirlka (sand goanna) and pussycat for food.

Rosie later travelled to Old Bililuna, where she encountered cars and planes for the first time. She began painting in the early 2000s. Her works, held in the collections of the Art Gallery of WA and the National Museum of Australia, are known for their dynamic use of colour, negative space and frenetic symbolism, vividly mapping the jila (living waterholes), jili (sandhills) and jumu (soakages) of her desert homelands.
