Woven Basket - Margaret Smith
Description
Crafted with care from desert grasses and raffia, this shallow basket showcases the vibrant colours and coiling techniques central to Tjanpi weaving. Its compact, flat form makes it perfect for holding small treasures or simply displaying as a work of art.
About the artist:
Margaret Smith is a Yankunytjatjara artist from the remote community of Imanpa in the Northern Territory. Weaving since 2014, Margaret has quickly refined her practice to create high-calibre baskets and sculptures that are instantly recognisable for their quirky, playful style.
She often experiments with animal forms — from cats to horses — bringing a lively sense of character and imagination to her work. Her fibre art has been celebrated nationally and internationally, with exhibitions including Fragrant Lands: Australian and Chinese Indigenous Art (Shanghai, 2014), Animal Instinct (Metropolis Gallery, Geelong, 2016), Tales from the Desert (Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery, 2016), and the Vincent Lingiari Art Award (Tangentyere Gallery, Alice Springs, 2019).
About the supplier:
Tjanpi Desert Weavers are a social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council working with women in the remote Central and Western deserts (WA, SA, NT) who earn an income from contemporary fibre art. Read more
